What made you fall in love with the GSD breed?

The many facial expressions is something I wasnt ready for and it teaches us a deep level of language, wild and pure cause there is so much they like to communicate and they are able to do it all without the need of words (although they do use many voice tones)

And they are not known for being very touchy; there are moments for this but not always

My other dog is very needy and cuddly and sometimes i think "maybe my gsd is feeling lonely and ignored" so i go Elmyra tf out of her and after a couple minutes she reacts in a way that makes me imagine her telling me "alright enough let me go" in an adolfian way
This is another thing that I actually appreciate very much about GSDs: the truly well bred among them are not all that needy in terms of touchiness. There's a continuum of course, and a lot of them that are bred purely for sale as pets have had that aloofness - which allows them to do a better job of shepherding - diluted. Sometimes considerably.

When I first started with this breed - pre-internet - I did a lot of reading, and one of the things that most attracted me was that these dogs are meant to be working partners, not lap dogs; and at least among the writers whose books I read, the ideal behavior to be expected was watchfulness and attentiveness - but from across the room. (Not necessarily literally. They're just not to be expected to slobber on your knee or lean on your leg, like some dogs do.) Working together, with my best dogs, has been my delight.

I always had German shepherds growing up but there was one that made me absolutely say I want nothing else in the house beside a German and his name was Roscoe. He was my uncle dog and everyone feared him and respected him since he was police trained. My nana was like stay away from that dog he dangerous . Yet well and behold he was gently eating cheese sticks from my lips letting me walk him and guarding me with loyalty I’ve never seen . After he passed I took a break from having any animals and now I have Bruschi who is intent say almost like Roscoe and he is an absolute joy and my best friend who got me out of the hardest times of my life. I will never not have a German shepherd.

Love this question! For me, it was honestly the presence too, the way a GSD walks like they already know ancient secrets. Then I met Rune’s litter and… yeah, that was it. One look and I was hooked.

I grew up with dogs and have always just considered myself a huge dog lover. GSDs always drew my attention for the usual reasons: the aesthetic, the intelligence, and the general cool factorBut my perspective completely shifted early in my career working at a emergency vet

(TW: Mild injury description)

I’d seen plenty of pet GSDs come through, but I’ll never forget the first time a working apprehension K9 came in. He’d had an accident in a field and got wrapped up in a tipped over barbed wire fence.

He wasn’t super injured, just a little beat up, but the difference in temperament was nothing ive seen before. Usually, I would expect a dog in that situation to be frantic or reactive, This dog was stoic, healthy, and completely dialed in like nothing even happened to him. Also seeing the bond between the Deputy and the dog was eye opening. It wasn't an owner/pet dynamic, it was total mutual respect.

That was the moment I realized these dogs aren't just pets, they are equals and partners. Seeing that level of capability and connection is what made them my whole world!

TL/DR They be badass partners
