For this week, our focus is on gear, thanks to our sponsor BolderK9.

About the Sponsor:

BolderK9 is a great example of a dog gear brand that genuinely gives back. They donate 5% of their profits to rescue organizations and have spent hundreds of hours volunteering with shelters, along with donating products to support their work. BolderK9 specializes in durable BioThane leashes, collars, toys, and equipment designed for everyday use.

For this week's QOTW, they've generously offered a Mystery Tug + Matching Leash + Bite Tug for the lucky winner.

This Week's Question:

“What piece of gear does your dog get the most use out of and why?”

Whether it’s a leash, tug, collar, or toy that never seems to wear out, we want to know what your dog reaches for (or drags around) the most.

A few ideas to get you thinking:
  • A leash or collar you rely on daily
  • A favorite tug or toy that’s seen better days
  • Gear that surprised you with how durable it is
  • Something your dog gets way more excited about than expected
  • Photos of your dog putting their gear to work
No dog right now?
  • Share gear you loved using with a past dog
  • Or what you’re excited to try with a future one

How it Works:

  • Staff will choose a winner on Tuesday, January 13th
  • Likes help, but aren’t the main deciding factor
  • Winner gets to hold the QOTW Trophy Badge
    • Also receive 3x permanent QOTW Trophies
    • PLUS: A Mystery Tug + Matching Leash + Bite Tug from BolderK9 (Available to USA residents only)

Thank you to @bolderk9 for supporting the HQ and for allowing us to give back to our community. If you’d like to check out their gear, you can use code GSDHQ at checkout for 15% off on their website through the end of January. Your support also helps contribute to the rescue organizations that they give back to.

Thanks again to everyone who takes part, we’re really glad to have you as part of the HQ.

So stoked to be a part of this! 🙌 I can start first.

Our gear preferences have changed over the years, but currently we rely on slip leads, basic ball tugs, and extra wide collars for our 3 dogs (2 shepherds and a husky). We do a lot of training and public outings with them, so that daily combo works perfectly for us. We always leave a long line or two in the truck to let the boys get some free roaming time if we go to a park or the beach, so i'll add that one on there too.

Can't wait to hear what everyone else uses - and hopefully make you guys some gear!

What a fun question! 😊 My girl Chloe is still a goofy pup - on the 21st of this month, she’ll be 6 months old. When she was tiny, I just randomly got a ball that looks like a soccer ball with a bunch of loops sticking out in various places. It looked liked fun for her & I hoped she’d like it. Instantly the ball became a huge deal. She is obsessed with these things! So far she’s only popped one & I promptly got her another three. The funniest part is that she even made up her own game - I call it Barkyball. I try to keep up with the rules, but they change a lot. We can play for hours until I think it’s like intermission time, that’s when the 1/2 time show starts - she will grab the long loop and shakes the wits right out of the ball. Runs around like she’s on stage, swinging that ball in arcs round and round her head and then *bap* smacks it on the ground like she’s trying to make a point! THAT show we’ve lovingly named “Epic Flail.” Thank you for including us!IMG_1436.jpeg

My most trusty gear is my extremely grippy leash. Even if I’m wearing gloves, I know that leash will not slip out of my hands. Pj also knows that when I grab the leash, it’s time to leave. He runs circles around the house in pure excitement. There’s something about watching a big dog gallop around like a puppy. As for Pjs most trusted “gear” it would have to be his green glow in the dark ball that whistles when you throw it. He has had it since he was 8 months old. It’s still his favorite fall, despite having 100s of other ones. We have gotten into arguments about this ball in the cold, the rain, blazing hot. Pj and the ball always win.

My German Shepherds favorite toys are their Lamb Chop stuffies. Zac likes to just carry them around. ANd they all get excited when I grab their leash and collars. (I don't keep their collars on I live on a lot of property and they are all microchipped I don't want to chance them getting caught up on something or pulling on each others collars).

I guess a leash and a collar are everyone's answer, but beyond that I have to give a huge shout out to the e-collar.

Because of what the e-collar provides, my dog has had true off leash freedom since he was about 6 months old.

He gets to run, sniff, explore, pee, poop, play, chase, and bark all over our tri-state area without restraint because he's free of the confines of his leash.

For some reason this pinnacle of technology has become controversial. Does my dog look unhappy or abused because we train, teach and learn with the e-collar?

Im a big fan of my e-collar. Like you said, because of the e-collar Pj has the opportunity to be off leash in certain settings. My townhome complex has a every dog must be on a leash policy, I work at a veterinary clinic where he goes to every day with me, so I have to leash him to enter the building. I do however, live on a lake, Pj loves to swim. His e-collar has made it possible for him to swim his heart out. I do also use a pinch collar at times, even though he’s not one to initiate a fight, he will for sure try to finish it if another dog provokes him . I love both the e-collar and the pinch collar.

Ohhh its gotta be the Jollyball with the rope attached! Its a large ball, like 10 or 12 inches wide, with a rope through it. Its good for fetch and tug. My girl loves it.

For Maliketh I would definitely say a Flirt Pole.
He has a lot of prey drive, and this is the one piece of gear that lets him fully tap into that natural instinct to chase and capture.

It’s amazing for conditioning and also teaching him body control from the jumps and twists, but mostly it’s just his one of his favorite things!

Eh, not really gear but a toy that’s really an old mop that my dad uses.

If you want a picture, just picture a 40-something year old man (shirtless) running around with a mop trailing behind him and this small puppy (who’s got fancy feet) trying his best to run after him lol

This concludes QOTW #6. Appreciate everyone for joining in and participating. The answers and photos/videos were fun to view. Big thank you to @bolderk9 for sponsoring the event and giving the winner a Ball Tug, Bite Tug, and Collar. Interested in checking out their gear? Click here (use code "GSDHQ" for 15% off)
