One of my favorite things about shepherds is how much personality they pack into that big frame. Sure, they’re serious working dogs when it’s time to be, but in the in-between moments? Absolute goofballs.

For example, my guy has this habit of trying to help me with chores. If I’m carrying firewood, he insists on grabbing the biggest log he can find and trotting along like he’s part of the crew. Half the time he trips over it, but he’s so proud you can’t help but cheer him on.

I know I can’t be the only one with a shepherd who has some hilarious or frustrating but lovable quirks.

What’s that one thing your dog does that cracks you up every single time?

This made me smile! I love the image of him proudly carrying a giant log like he’s on the work crew. I don’t have my own shepherd yet, but little quirks like that are exactly what I’m excited for.
That’s the best part of shepherds, they’ll keep you laughing with their quirks as much as they impress you with their brains. Can’t wait to hear what funny habits your future pup comes up with.

Ada always howls when my wife comes home from work. it's kindof a talking howl.

It's hilarious

She doesn't howl when I come home, but I'm semi retired so we are almost always together. View attachment 43
That’s hilarious, shepherds really do have their own way of “talking.” Ada clearly knows who she needs to roll out the welcome song for. Sounds like she and your wife have a special little ritual.

Funny how they pick certain people or moments for those howls. One of mine used to only do it when he heard my truck coming down the road, like he was announcing to the whole house, “he’s here!”

Love the picture too, she looks like she owns that yard.

That’s so cute! It’s like she’s giving your wife a full recap of the day the moment she walks in. Does she do the talking howl every single time, or only when your wife’s been gone for a while?

Chase and I established early on that he can have "controlled destruction", which means he can destroy certain soft cardboards and things of the like. So he brings me things from the recycling bin and sits in front of me to see if he's allowed to have it, and if I say no he gets something he's allowed to. If I say yes, he happily trots off destroy it.

That’s actually a brilliant system, “controlled destruction” sounds like the perfect outlet for a young shepherd. Smart way to give him a job while keeping your furniture safe.

He's never destroyed a single thing! Every time he gets a little wild, he goes and finds something in the recycling! He's such a good boy.

My Chloe who we had to put down at 15 after she had a stroke…I still miss this dearly…when I’d come home from work I always went straight to the bathroom after an hour drive and she’d follow me “talking” all the way. I’d literally say to her “tell me about your day!” And she’d go on and on “talking” then she’d pause and I’d say “Really? What else happened?” And she’d go on and on “talking” this was my first 10 minutes home every night lol. I miss my girl very much but I always think about that when I get sad. I should mention she HATED having her picture taken for some reason so it was hard to catch her.

With my girl it's when one of her spare hoomins comes over. She'll be doing her big alert bark and as soon as the door is slightly open and she gets a whiff of them, mid-bark she goes straight to squeals of delight. It's the funniest transition into a HSD making sounds you don't expect. It cracks us up every time and then she gets upset that we're laughing at her.
