Hi Gang,

It would be beneficial for me to be able to have him heel on my right side at times as well. I've never taught heeling on both sides before.

I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter but what command are you using to have the dog switch sides in the heel? Also, do you teach the entry the same way?

Thanks.

I just use switch as my command for changing sides. Pip is normally on my left (for heeling beside me or fancy heeling) but occasionally in public I need her to go to my right. She is much smoother going into the position on my left than my right. Lol! I still occasionally need to lure her onto my right.

The command I use for switching sides is “side”, it cues the dog to move around behind me and end up on the opposite leg.
That's how I think I'll teach it. It makes sense, especially because the dog is going to do this in motion and I can't have him walking in front of me, obviously.

It’ll make way more sense in motion that way, keeps everything clean and fluid without the dog cutting across you.

Definitely keep me posted on how it goes once you start working on it. I’d be curious to see how he picks it up and if you find any tricks that make the transition smoother.

Definitely. I'm not sure when I'll start. Probably soon because it's getting to the point of being a necessity.
