How backed up is biting your dog back when they nip you?

I hope I’m putting this in the right place, but I’ve had this question bugging me for a while. Sometimes when I’m scrolling for advice about puppies, I come across people who say they were told by their grandmother (or someone similar) to bite their dog’s ear when the dog bites, as a way to stop the behavior.

Obviously, I wouldn’t do this myself—it feels wrong, and I really don’t want fur in my mouth. But I’m curious where this idea came from in the first place, and whether it has ever actually worked. If it does work, why? And if it doesn’t, why not? Does it depend on the dog?
