I will document my training efforts with Murphy in this channel. Expect sporadic updates.

To begin, here is a list of Murphy's current commands. I know I was quoted as saying she knows 50, commands, but that depends on how one defines a 'command'. Are verbal, touch signals, and hand signals one command? I don't know. There's a legend at the bottom.

Command List*
Updated 10/18/2025
Update 10/22/2025

Obedience
  1. Sit (v, h, t, d, c) [Murphy knows three hand signals for this because she has had four different people train her]
  2. Down (v, h, t, d) [Murphy knows two hand signals, and will do this command if I tap my foot twice on the ground.]
  3. Touch (v, h, d)
  4. Come (v, h, d, c)
  5. Emergency Recall (v, d)
  6. No Bark (v, h)
  7. Heel (v, h, d) [right and left side, tapping side of thigh twice]
  8. Focus (v, h)
  9. Stay (v, h, d) [do not move until released]
  10. Wait (v, h, d) [focus, will be released momentarily]
  11. Up (v, h) [sit from a down or stand from a sit]
  12. Back Up (v, h, d)
  13. Off (v, d) [same as leave it]
  14. Leave It (v, d)
  15. Potty (v) [eliminate on command]
  16. Water (v, h) [drink water on command]
  17. Take it (v, h)
  18. Give it (v, h)
  19. Drop it (v, h)
  20. Kennel (v)
Beginner Trick Training
  1. Kiss me (v)
  2. Spin (v, h) [Murphy will spin in the direction you circle in the air (clock or counterclockwise)]
  3. Off (v, h) [jump off of a platform]
  4. On (v, h) jump onto a platform
  5. Speak (v, h) [Murphy knows three handsignals for this because I'm inconsistent]
  6. Jump (v, h, d) [verticle]
  7. Roll over (v, h, d)
  8. Shake (v, h)
  9. Stand (v, h)
  10. Upstairs (v, h)
  11. Downstairs (v, h)
  12. Inside (v)
  13. Outside (v)
  14. Pets (h) [This is a hand signal asking permission to pet her. She almost never declines :)]
Advanced Trick Training
  1. Hoop (v, h) [jump through a hoop]
  2. Frisbee [I consider catching a frisbee to be a trick because she can catch two frisbees in succession that i throw at the same time.]
  3. Howl (v)
  4. Jump (v, h) [timed, over an object]
  5. Go Away (v) [turn and walk away]
Working Dog Tasks
  1. Door (v, h, d, c) [Murphy can open and close doors with her paws, as well as opening fridge doors that have ropes or clothes tied around the handle. She can open lever doors, but she cannot open round door knobs.]
  2. Light (v, h, d) [Murphy can turn lights off with her paws]
  3. Find It (v) [Murphy has proven to be able to find a wide variety of scents over a distance of a square mile (I have not tried anything further because I was tired of walking that far to hide the items) Items she has found: sardines, liver treats, my husband, my child, myself, scented cotton balls]
  4. Pressure (v, h) [Deep Pressure Therapy]
  5. Medication Reminders (none) [it wouldn't be a reminder if i gave her a cue. She cues me with barking]
  6. Anxiety Alert (none) [It wouldn't be an alert if I gave her a cue. She cues me with DPT]
* Legend
v = verbal command
h = hand signal
t = touch command
d = at a distance
c = chinese

I swear when I first put together this list there was only 30 commands on it and over the last week my husband and I have remembered so many other commands that we have hit 45 commands.

Wow Murph, this is really cool to see. You and Murphy have a bunch of commands down pat. Are you guys currently working on any new ones?

Thanks for the share. Super stoked to see you are starting a journal!

Right now I have two new puppies, and Murphy is actually training them for me! So we are working with then primarily.

For Murphy I would like to start working on verbal commands that don't have hand signals. I would also like to teach her to turn lights on with her nose instead of paws because.... her paws are big as hell.

I made another post about Murphy's issues with the vet and having her paws touched. I did not do enough training when she was a puppy, so she does not let anyone, not even me, touch her paws.

We are currently doing vet desensitization training by going to the vet twice a week just to make it a neutral place, and at night I am working with touching her paws to correct this issue.

This is absolutely incredible. What a Wonder Dog indeed! You've put so much into her and I'm sure she pays it back in spades. What an amazing animal.

It has been 5 years of hard work. She is my first dog and the loml ❤

That’s an incredible amount of work, Murph. It’s one thing to train obedience, but to keep that level of precision across so many cues and categories is next-level dedication. Love how you’ve built variety into her skills too, it’s clear Murphy enjoys learning just as much as working. Must be awesome to watch her switch between tasks so effortlessly.

I'll put together a video when I'm not so busy and we are done with this vet thing.

I was bored in my 20's lol. She's 5. This is literally years of work.

Also remember I'm a professional dog trainer.

That makes a lot of sense, you can really see the years of experience and intention behind how she works. It shows in every detail. Would love to see that video when you get a chance, I’m sure a lot of folks here could learn from it. Hope the vet stuff smooths out soon, give Murphy some extra pats for me.

Tomorrow I am going to try to video the trick routine. In one of the threads today, I was reminded that I have a body language command for Murphy, so I hope I will be able to adequately show a subtle face movement for a trick while in a 3rd person camera angle. Whatever happens, hopefully I get at least one good take. Wish me luck.

I think I'm going to try to do a routine with these tricks:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Touch
  • Spin
  • Roll Over (maybe, she hates this one because of her barrel chest)
  • Bark
  • No bark
  • Jump

It’s wild how much the body cues matter once you start paying attention to them, sometimes it feels like they read your mind before you even move.

That’s a solid list too. Love that you’re including both “bark” and “no bark”, that kind of control mid-routine really shows the bond you’ve built.
And yeah, I can see why roll-over might be low on her favorites list with that build

Good luck with the filming! Even if it takes a few takes, I’m sure it’ll look sharp once she’s locked in.
