Disclaimer: This post is about making dog TREATS, not FOOD. Treats should never be your dog's main source of nutrition, and as always, you should check with a veterinarian or veterinarian nutritionist if you have any questions about what, how much, or when to feed your dog.

Why Should You Make Dog Treats?
My favorite thing about making treats, is you can tailor them specifically to your dog, keeping in mind any allergies or preferences they have. For me, it's also a great bonding experience for my dog and myself. The way to a man's heart is indeed through his stomach, and so, too, is man's best friend's.
But Murph! You can just buy treats from the store!
Yes, you can. However, some of these pet store treat bags have me making the
face. The opinions expressed in this article, as always, are completely mine. It takes a lot of time to put together puzzle toys and treat sets for your dog, so it makes sense if it is more convent to buy them. However, if you want to spend the time, it can be very rewarding and fun.
Anecdotally Speaking...
Yesterday, I spent about an hour putting together a chicken/blueberry/kibble treat bowl for my dogs. This concoction got mixed reviews. Murphy really liked it and ate it all. Mowgli basically inhaled it (he's a lab...), but Merida... Merida ate every single piece of kibble and chicken and left a blueberry massacre on my floor.
This got me thinking about making treats. I have several dog puzzle toys that advertise their treat recipe books when you buy the toy, but to be honest, I never bothered to check them out. I've been winging it this whole time. Now that my treats have been getting negative reviews, I am going to do a deep dive around dog treats, and how to make them at home. After, I will take pictures of the treats I make for Murphy and the gang, and post them in her journal.

Ingredients Matter
Picky eaters, allergies, and pup parent preferences all play a huge role in what an owner feeds their dog. For example, most websites, veterinarians, and knowledgeable pet parents will warn to feed organic peanut butter (making sure there is no xylitol in the ingredients list, because it is toxic to dogs).
Please use caution when adding or changing anything in your dog's diet. As we all know, dogs have very sensitive digestive systems, and they do not work the same way as ours does. I myself have been guilty of trying to create treats or add things to my dog's diet that either did not agree with their stomachs, or pallets.
