Hi All:

I've never had a Shepard, so we are working our way slowly. He's an old guy, figure 6-8. Smart. I'm not sure who is training whom at this point. Looking through Spotify, I came across this audio book, and I wanted to check with you folks if any of you have ever heard of the author or book and thoughts?

That book gets recommended a lot, and it’s not bad it’s approachable and easy to digest, especially if you’re brand new to Shepherds. Think of it more as a broad overview than a training manual you want to follow to the letter.

My only caution is that a lot of “for dummies” style books tend to oversimplify the breed and lean a bit pet-centric. German Shepherds, especially smart, mature ones, usually do best with structure, clarity, and purpose rather than generic obedience advice.

If you’re working with an older, intelligent dog and figuring each other out, you’re already doing the most important part: going slow and paying attention to what’s actually in front of you. Use books like that as background context, but let the dog teach you who he is. That part never comes from an audiobook anyway.
