Hi everyone, I just joined the group. A little about my background.i have been blessed to own 11 shepherds during my life. I currently own just 1 he’s an 11 year old male and my world ( I have a chronic disabling illness ) my mom owns a6 year old female. Most of the time I had 2 or3 shepherds of my own , plus my parents dogs . I was a medical professional before I had to retire early due to illness. I also worked part time as a vet technician for 10 years as well as working for my dog trainer at his kennel . I have experience in basic training all the way through to protection training. I also have a lot of information on the medical issues this breed ( I’ve either had them with my personal dogs or seen them in the practice/ boarding/ training ) and would be happy to answer any questions . I occasionally do a little training myself for close family and friends although that has become more difficult as my illness progresses. Best breed in the world , happy to be with fellow lovers of the breed.

Welcome in! owning 11 Shepherds is seriously impressive! I look forward to hearing your stories and advice!

Stannis , but we call him Stanley or Stan. He was named after a Gameof thrones character who a week after rescuing him as a 16 week puppy did one of the most heinous acts ever seen on tv . ( he was abandoned by his owner to my former boss Who is my trainer for aggression issues and I took him in , I already had 2 dogs at the time but he needed a home and I had the resources to handle him ) If he is naughty we all him Stannis but usually just Stan. He is still prone to aggression but his obedience is impeccable .we still keep vigilant with other dogs and people. His previous owners had no clue how to handle him and something bad happened to cause a lot of problems. He has become extremely protective since I have become ill , will always be in between myself and any perceived threat . I am dealing with a chronic illness and this dog has been my constant companion. He can predict pain coming on before it hits me .i hate that he is 11 , but I owned his uncle Ike and he lived to 12&1/2. He is extremely healthy, bloodwork of a 2 year old dog , great muscle tone for his age . , I feed him a raw diet , or. CARNA4 kibble ( a Canadian company, Canada has higher standards for dog food ) if I forget to defrost a meal he gets the CARNA4. he gets daily walks even if I’m barely able to walk , I keep his weight between 85 to 87 lbs ( easy to do feeding raw , which I’ve been doing for 15 years , my last 3 dogs were raw fed and other than a yearly vet visit or if he gets seasonal allergies he’s healthy vs my previous kibble fed dogs who had massive vet files ) It is actually cheaper to feed raw vs the KARNA4 , or any premium kibble , which most people don’t believe. I minimally vaccinate him , at this point just rabies / possible lepto but never more than 1 vaccine at a time. He did bloat my 1st bloat (a 360 bloat because he does everything to the max ) 2years ago just out of the blue , he collapsed in my yard at 10 o’clock at night I rushed him to the emergency hospital 10 minutes away and he had surgery .(at the time he was on a high quality kibble ( which I found worms in several bags , thus the change to the very expensive CARNA 4 ) i was home bound and couldn’t get out to do his shopping , raw fed dogs usually don’t bloat ) I brought him home a day after and we had to sedate him as he was ready to go even though his whole abdomen was stitched stem to stern , he’s a tough dog .My only issue is I know we have less time vs more time. When he is gone it will be the first time in my life without a dog . I am trying not to think about that , I’m hoping he lives to 16, but I will not let him suffer for my sake .i worked at a vet practice for years and saw too many animals who suffered needlessly because the owners we selfish , I will not let that happen to him , he’s been too good to me to even have one bad day and I truly believe it’s the one true gift we can give them , a peaceful passing . The single dog is Stan , the one with the 3 were my last multiple dogs Stan , Nina and Ike . All related , same breeder .
