Have you ever watched a social media video of a dog doing a trick or behavior and wonder how they did it?

A lot of social media videos are just well trained gods following cues. Lets go over potential training methods.

Non-Verbal Cues
Many people are familiar with hand signals. However, there are many different kinds of signals to your dog simply with body langue. Dogs are very in tune with body language, and when your dog has intense focus, it would be really easy to hold a camera still and preform tricks.

Example:
I have trained Murphy to do a "down" when i move my eyes to the floor. This can be applicable to any trick.

More Examples:
  • Telling your dog to bark wildly, and then signaling no bark after you say some silly phrase.
  • Training your dog to bare their teeth
  • Training your dog leave it around food and framing it as they don't like it
  • Training a "sad" face
When watching social media, remember, nothing is as it seems! You're doing great with your fur baby!

Have you seen videos like this online? How did they make you feel? Let's talk!

Unfortunately, I do not own a full length mirror to video my eyes and my dog at the same time, so you will just have to trust me on this one.

This is a neat thread Murph. These kinds of videos on social media have blown up over the last couple of years. I know of a few dog personalities that are quite famous because of it. There's a local-ish guy who has a big channel on youtube called Buddy and Mikes Pal. His videos have been cool to see and are quite wholesome, they've even done some charity work.

I love learning more subtle body language commands. I learned it from a book.

A lot of social media dog stuff makes me cringe. There's people looking for help and guidance. They go on YouTube, Facebook, etc and see things that look impossible and give up before they even try.

The tiny puppies being lured into heads up heeling really bothers me for some reason. LOL. I don't know why.
