German Shepherds are not “wait for better weather” dogs. Even on rainy days, recovery days, or when you’re under the weather yourself, their brain and body still need engagement. The good news? You don’t need a 5-mile hike to drain a shepherd’s energy. Here’s what actually works indoors.

Nose Work & Scent Games (High Impact, Low Effort)

If you do only one thing, do this.

Hide:
  • Kibble
  • Small treats
  • A favorite toy
Around the house and release them to “find it.” You can start simple (one room), then increase difficulty.

Scent work taps into:
  • Natural tracking drive
  • Mental problem-solving
  • Calm focus
Ten minutes of scent work can tire a shepherd more than a long walk. Especially working lines. Wanting to learn more about living with a working line? I made this post "Living with a Working Line German Shepherd: What I've Learned (and What I'd do Differently)", have a look.

Structured Tug (Not Chaos Tug)

Tug is incredible when structured properly.

Incorporate:
  • “Out”
  • “Sit”
  • “Down”
  • Eye contact before restart
This turns play into mental work. You’re not just draining energy, you’re reinforcing impulse control. Working lines especially thrive on this type of engagement.

Puzzle Feeding & Food Challenges

Instead of feeding from a bowl:
  • Frozen Kong
  • Snuffle mat
  • DIY towel roll-ups
  • Cardboard box searches
This slows them down and activates their brain. Mental fatigue often leads to calm behavior afterward.

Short Obedience Sessions

Five-minute focused sessions can work wonders.

Practice:
  • Position changes
  • Duration holds
  • Place work
  • Recall drills indoors
Structured repetition builds clarity and confidence. These tools also help dogs that are commonly labeled as "stubborn". Interested in finding out more? Have a look at "Are German Shepherds Stubborn?"

Teach a New Skill

Novelty burns energy fast.

Try:
  • “Spin”
  • “Touch”
  • “Crawl”
  • Object discrimination
  • Target work
Shepherds love learning. Learning drains them more efficiently than free movement.

Impulse Control Drills

Rainy days are perfect for:
  • Extended “place” command
  • Food bowl waits
  • Controlled doorway exits
Impulse control work builds calm. Not just exhaustion. If you are interested in encouraging calm behavior have a look at my post "How to encourage calm behavior in a German Shepherd?"

Working Line vs Show Line Indoors

Working lines may need:
  • More structured engagement
  • Faster-paced sessions
  • Purpose-driven activities
Show lines may settle with slightly less intensity, but both benefit from mental work.

Can You Really Tire a Shepherd Indoors?

Yes, if the activity challenges their brain. Physical exhaustion alone doesn’t create calm. Mental fulfillment does. This is especially important during adolescence, when energy peaks.

Final Takeaway

On days when outdoor exercise isn’t possible: Focus on structured mental engagement.
  • Scent
  • Control
  • Learning
  • Impulse work
Fifteen intentional minutes beats an hour of chaotic pacing. Your shepherd doesn’t just need movement, they need purpose.

I can't stress how great puzzles and snuffle toys have been for quick energy burners if Chase got a little wild.

I also like to use rainy days as house etiquette days where we work on things like where he should sit when I'm working in the kitchen with "place" commands.
That’s a great approach, turning rainy days into structure days is such a smart move. I like the “place” command idea too, builds patience and calm focus. Sounds like Chase is picking things up really well.

My favorite part of having a dog is someone to keep my feet warm while I work :)

I am a bit of a masochist. I don't care if it's raining, you're getting that 2 mile walk so you'll leave me alone for a few hours.
The “rain or shine” walks are the price we pay for a few hours of peace and quiet. Somehow they still have the energy to do zoomies when we get back though!
