We just had our first puppy school day with Rocky! Unfortunately m, he is VERY energetic and would not stop barking/yowling/whining or pulling on his leash to meet other puppies! Although I’m happy he isn’t being aggressive, he has also attempted to pounce and ends up scaring off the other dogs 😭.

We’re not condoning the behaviour, of course, but it’s just really frustrating and I was wondering if anyone knew how to prevent this behaviour?

Totally normal, and honestly, that first class sounds exactly like what most of us go through with a young shepherd. You’re right to be happy he’s not showing aggression, that over-the-top excitement is just his drive showing before he’s learned how to channel it.

The best thing you can do for now is work below his threshold. If he’s losing his mind trying to get to the other dogs, create a bit of distance where he can focus again. Reward any moment of calm, even a half-second of quiet or a quick glance back at you. Over time, you’ll build the foundation for neutrality.

Outside of class, practice engagement drills, things like name recognition, eye contact, and focus games in calm environments before trying them around distractions. The goal isn’t to suppress his energy, but to teach him that you are the most interesting thing in the room.

Hang in there, most of us have been in your shoes. The chaos in the beginning turns into control later if you stay consistent. You’ve got this.
